The provided data table (downloadable excel file) shows the ratio of female to male registered voter by cities wholly or in part in Harris County (Texas’ most populated county) at the same point in 2018 and 2022.

In Harris County, females comprise 52% of registered voters and males 46%. In 2018, the ratio going into the midterms was females 52% and males 45%. The one percent increase for males can be explained by the fact that registered voters self-identifying as “male” have grown by 12%, slightly outpacing self-identifying “female’” registrants’ 10%.

The Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe vs Wade on June 24, 2022. Soon thereafter, stories suggesting that the SCOTUS decision would motivate more women to register to vote began to circulate. At this juncture, the Harris County data supports the narrative that number of female registrants increased. But, it does not support the suggestion that added registrants increased the female percent lead over male registrants.
